Student Activities

On recommendation of the first Review Committee (1953), this Department was started as the Proctorial department in 1956 with the object of improving the personal qualities of students and looking after their discipline, welfare and extra-curricular activities. The Department was later renamed as the Department of Students' Activities with the redesignation of the post of the Proctor in 1985 to the Professor-in-charge of Students' Activities. The Department functions under the direct supervision of the Professor-in-charge Dean of Students. In as much as the genesis of the Proctorial work is in shaping the career, conduct and discipline of students both in their academic as well as extra-academic fields, it warrants a lot of personal contact with students both inside and outside their class rooms. As a matter of fact, the Department has been looking after the following specific works related to students' activities.

1. Students' Discipline: In an institution like the Bengal Engineering College (D.U.), students' discipline is naturally a matter of vital importance, at present the total student strength is more than 1800.

2. Hostels and Messes : There are 14 hostels including one for girls, which provide accommodation for students and employment to about 150 mess employees. Each hostel is under the direct supervision of a superintendent selected from the members of faculty. Hostel Messes are supervised by the Mess Committee. The Assistant Proctor, apart from assisting the Professor-in-Charge of Students' Activities in day to day work, also functions as the Officer-in-Charge of the Mess Section attached to the Main Office. A Joint Mess Committee is a common forum for all the hostel messes' and functions under a Chairman who is elected from amongst the Hostel Superintendents. The Professor-in-Charge of Students' Activities acts as the Vice Chancellor's nominee in the Joint Mess Committee.

3. Co-curricular Activities:

  1. National Cadet Corps (NCC): The 1 Bengal Comn (T) Regiment and 4 Bengal Air Sqn. have raised one unit each of the senior Corps for students of this University, while the former is strictly meant for boys, the latter enrolls girl students also.
  2. Athletic Club: The University has an Athletic Club and has got facilities for amongst all the outdoor and indoor games and sports. The university has adequate provision for major games such as Cricket, Football, etc., in the spacious grounds, the ''Oval'' and the "Lords". The beautifully maintained Oval ground is perhaps second of its kind in eastern India, being next only to the Eden Gardens, Calcutta. There are a number of Tennis Courts, Volleyball Courts and Badminton Court.

4. Liaison with Guardian and other Miscellaneous Students' Affairs: Besides the works referred to above, functions of the Department include issuance of various types of certificates, conductance of Students' Union election, issuance of railway concession, correspondence regarding absence of students from their hostels, correspondence with guardians regarding various matters of the students and other miscellaneous activities.
