Mining Engineering as a discipline was first started in India at Bengal Engineering and Science University (formerly, Bengal Engineering College), Shibpur in the year 1906 to meet the requirements of statutory provision in Indian mines. After the establishment of the Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad in 1926, the entire infrastructure of this department was shifted. However, after independence, Dr. B. C. Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, took personal interest in revamping the department to satisfy the growing demand of qualified mining professionals, and the Department of Mining & Geology was re-born in 1956. In 2005 the Geology section was separated and the department was renamed as the Department of Mining Engineering. |
| The Department offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. The Department has also been recognized as a Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) Centre by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for pursuit of higher studies by the faculty members of other Mining Engineering institutions. The sponsored projects and consultancies undertaken by the department in the areas includes Environmental appraisal and planning, Rock mechanics and ground control, Computational Geomechanics, GIS/GPS and remote sensing, Mine system optimization, Miners' health and safety, Mineral beneficiation, IT application in Mining, Bulk material handling, Gas flow characterization through rock, Environmental appraisal and planning etc. |
