The Conference on "Building a Knowledge Society and Enabling Make In India through Industry-Academia Platform"

 

CII and IIEST, Shibpur jointly held the Conference on "Building a Knowledge Society and Enabling Make In India through Industry-Academia Platform", on 22nd August, at The Hotel Lalit Great Eastern, Kolkata.  There was a huge turnaround of faculty members, students, research scholars and  alumni from IIEST itself and attended by other industries and academic institutes from the Eastern Region, amassing to around four hundred delegates.

The President of India addressed a Plenary Session, during which there was quite a blitzkrieg of ideas, experiences and suggestions from Industry Heads.  Present during this session were TV Narendran-MD Tata Steel, Naushad Forbes-President CII, Chandrajit Banerjee- Director-General CII, Prof. K.Radhakrishnan-the Leader  behind the Mars Mission, ISRO and presently, Chairman, Board of Governance IIEST, Shibpur. The industry suggested steering of Higher Education in India to pursue Research of the Highest Order to compete globally which will enable Indian Industries to outsource technology from Indian R &D Institutes. The Indian Industry also required excellent quality man force, and thereafter sealing up interaction between industry and academia is essential.

 

The President, ShriPranab Mukherjee in his address stressed on the need to equip the youth of our country, with the appropriate skill and knowledge so that they evolve into a strong and efficient largest workforce in the world by 2022. To reap the Demographic Dividend of our large youth population, a strategy should be in place or else this will turn into a great Demographic Liability. Shri Mukherjee said, " ......to achieve a high place in the International Community, we must evolve into a Knowledge Society. And that can happen if we emphasise on Research and Innovation through a deeper Interface between the Industry and Academia.The partnership can focus on joint Research Projects and creation of world- class infrastructure".  Dr. ParthaChatterjee, Education Minister, West Bengal, in his speech  realised the importance of such tie-ups of the Industry-Academia. Prof. Ajoy Ray, Director, IIEST, Shibpur stressed that funding was extremely crucial, and large support be it from industry and Government, is essential to build up world- class infrastructure.
