Architecture

After independence of India in 1947, the Department of Architecture, Town and Regional Planning was started on the recommendation of a special committee appointed by Government of West Bengal. Two new courses were started at the same time – one with a five year degree programme in Architecture another with a two year part time diploma programme in Town & Regional Planning. This department produced more than 800 graduates in Architecture and more than 300 post graduates in Town Planning since last fifty years. After 1974, the diploma of Town Planning was converted into a full time post graduate degree course under Calcutta University. In 1990, the Master of Town & Regional Planning postgraduate degree was recognized by Institute of Town Planners India (ITPI), New Delhi. In 1993, Bengal Engineering College achieved the status of Deemed University. Under direct Central Assistance computer facilities have been introduced in the department both for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The department has developed a Material Museum for permanent display of samples of building materials for acquaintance of the students. Computer Aided Architectural Design laboratory and Multimedia Simulation Laboratory have been developed for research and practice of the students and faculty members of this department.

Department subdomaining was done in June 1999. Each faculty room has been provided with one Pentium computer having individual E-mail account and Internet connection.

Similar facilities are being extended for students in CAAD Laboratory and Multimedia Simulation Laboratory.

At present this department provides facilities for research and development in the following areas under Ph.D. Programme:

  • Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing
